Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

LANAP is a modern procedure that is an alternative to more traditional approaches to the treatment of periodontal, or gum, disease. Many Americans have gum disease, but few ever get treated before it becomes a larger problem. Here are some of the more frequently asked questions about LANAP.

What is LANAP and Who is it For?

LANAP is a modern option for the treatment of gum disease that employs a special dental laser called the PerioLase MVP-7. The treatment is minimally invasive and can usually be done in two office visits. There are no scalpels or stitches. Those with moderate to severe gum disease can benefit greatly from the LANAP treatment.

Why May LANAP Be Preferable to an Alternative?

LANAP gum treatment has many advantages over the more traditional methods of treating gum disease, like scaling and root planing. These traditional methods require the use of instruments to debride, or remove, diseased gum tissue. LANAP, however, is  less invasive than scaling, leaving more healthy tissue behind. Recovery time is shorter and new tissue growth occurs more readily.

What Can I Expect During LANAP Treatment?

X-rays are usually done before treatment to define affected areas. You’ll receive a local anesthetic, and then the small laser fiber is used to clear away diseased tissue. A thorough cleaning of the area is then done, and you are free to drive home!

What Happens After LANAP Treatment?

After LANAP treatment, you may have some soreness which can be relieved with Ibuprofen. You will probably not brush or floss in the area for about a week after treatment and will eat a soft diet. Smoking should be avoided. If you are given splints to immobilize the teeth during healing, it is important to wear them as directed.

What Kind of Dentist Performs LANAP?

Dentists who have been trained to perform LANAP at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry and who have obtained a LANAP Proficiency certificate may perform the LANAP procedure.
