Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

Periodontal disease is a gum infection that is caused by plaque buildup that allows bacteria to build up on the gumline. When left untreated, it can lead to deterioration of the jaw and tooth loss. There are many early signs of periodontal disease that a periodontist such as Dr. Ting can detect during a dental exam. At Think Oral Implants and Periodontics, we specialize in treating our patients with gum disease. Our periodontist can evaluate your gums to determine which periodontal disease treatment you need, depending on what stage of gum disease you have. We can also give you important oral hygiene tips that will help you to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy after your gum treatment.

Symptoms of periodontal disease

Periodontal disease can be a silent disease because oftentimes most symptoms don’t appear until it has advanced into later stages. Some early signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Receding gums
  • Bleeding, especially when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, and tender red gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Persistent bad breath

When you think you may have periodontal disease, our periodontal specialist can evaluate your oral health and offer periodontal disease treatment. Treating your gum disease early on is the only way you can reverse your periodontal disease. Gingivitis is when the infection has yet to attack your bone yet.

Periodontal disease treatments

Our periodontist will examine your gums to determine the best treatment for you, which depends on the severity and stage of the disease. Some common periodontal disease treatments used at our office include:

  • Deep dental cleaning: During a deep dental cleaning, all plaque or tartar is removed from above and below the gumline.
  • Scaling and Root Planing: During scaling and root planing, a nonsurgical deep cleaning procedure, a patient is under local anesthesia. We will scrape away all tartar and plaque. Planing is used on rough spots on the tooth root to make them smoother once again. This helps remove bacteria and gives you a clean surface for your gums to reattach to your teeth.
