Periodontist

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults and should always be addressed promptly to minimize permanent damage to a patient’s mouth, gums, teeth, and jaw.

Your general dentists will handle routine dental care issues such as teeth cleaning and filling cavities, but when there are more advanced dental health issues concerning your gum tissues, a patient should seek the services of a skilled and experienced periodontist such as Dr. Ting and the team at Think Oral Implants and Periodontics.

What kinds of things does a periodontist treat?

Dr. Ting specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal diseases. This will include addressing a variety of issues related to gum inflammation, gum disease, plaque and tartar build-up, infections in the gums and roots of teeth, and tooth loss requiring implants. In addition to treating and healing these issues, a periodontist will also offer long-terms solutions such as installing dental implants or other similar restorative services.

Some periodontal issues can be handled by a general dentist. However, more advanced issues coupled with patients who are dealing with the effects of aging, or who have other risk factors such as smoking and diabetes, or those who take certain medications, are best treated by a periodontist. Complex cases are best treated by a periodontal specialist.

Periodontal procedures

A periodontist can perform many kinds of treatments and procedures.

Some of the most common procedures include:

Scaling and root planing. To preserve the health of gum tissue and treat inflammation, a periodontist will remove build-ups of bacteria and tartar which can be the cause of the inflammation. Gum pockets are cleaned and if necessary, treated with antibiotics to help reduce and eliminate the infection.

Tissue grafting and regeneration. When soft tissues and bone have been destroyed, it is possible to actively regrow them by grafting healthy tissues and bone to the affected areas.

Pocket elimination surgery. This is also known as flap surgery and involves reducing the pocket size between the teeth and gums. Sometimes, surgery is also performed on a patient’s jawbone to eliminate indentations that would otherwise encourage the growth and colonization of bacteria.

Dental implants. When a patient loses a tooth, dental implants provide the most effective and long lasting course of treatment. With a dental implant, after a diseased or damaged tooth is removed, a titanium implant is drilled into a patient’s jawbone. After the implant fuses with the jawbone, a permanent cap or bridge is set in place. Many times, these implants can last a patient’s entire lifetime.
